The name 'Soi Cowboy' originated from the cowboy-hatted, African-American soldier who opened the first bar on this street in the early 1970s. His name was T. G. Edwards, and he named the bar after himself. The bar was known as "T-Girls" until the end of the Vietnam War, at which point it was renamed Soi Cowboy.

The name of the street comes from T. G. "Cowboy" Edwards, a retired American airman who opened one of the first bars in the 1970s, and who always wore a cowboy hat. As one of the most famous attractions in Bangkok, it was featured in scenes of the film The Hangover II, which was set in Thailand.
